Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
